Is it really food intolerances, or is your digestion & gut struggling?

Many women tell me they suddenly “can’t tolerate” foods they’ve eaten for years. Gluten, dairy, onions, beans, apples… suddenly everything feels like a problem. Bloating, reflux, gas, discomfort, unpredictable bowels.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to hear this clearly:You’re not imagining it, and it’s rarely because your body has turned against food.

What I see far more often is that digestion itself has become compromised, particularly during perimenopause and menopause. And when digestion is under strain, even good, nourishing foods can cause symptoms.

Digestion doesn’t start in the stomach — it starts in the brain. Chronic stress, rushing meals, eating on the go, eating late, or eating while wired-tired all switch the body out of digestive mode. Even with “good” food choices, the body may not break food down properly.

Low stomach acid is another hugely overlooked issue, especially in women in their 40s and beyond. Ironically, low stomach acid often presents as reflux, heartburn, bloating after meals and that heavy “food just sitting there” feeling. Without enough stomach acid:

  • Protein isn’t broken down properly

  • Nutrients like iron, zinc and magnesium aren’t absorbed

Bacteria aren’t neutralised as they should be

This creates a knock-on effect through the gut, contributing to bloating, gas, belching, constipation, loose stools or alternating between the two — often labelled as food intolerances.

Bile flow is another unsung hero of digestion. When bile is sluggish (often due to stress, hormone changes or liver overload), fat digestion suffers, toxins aren’t cleared effectively, and hormone recycling becomes an issue — something many women notice as cycles become heavier or symptoms intensify at this stage of life.

Why does this matter so much?

Because if digestion and absorption aren’t working well, the body can’t:

  • Build and balance hormones

  • Regulate blood sugar

  • Support thyroid function

  • Calm the nervous system

  • Produce steady energy

  • Support weight regulation

Symptoms often get blamed on hormones alone, when in reality the body is trying to function without the building blocks it needs.

In this training, I explain why food is rarely the enemy, why restriction often backfires, and how supporting digestion can restore tolerance, energy and resilience.
